Russell Shields

Chairman, QLD & NT, ANZ

Russell Shields is Chairman of ANZ Banking Group for Queensland & Northern Territory. In this role, he is the central focal point for ANZ, in Business, Community and Government for Queensland & Northern Territory. He also has direct executive responsibility for the Institutional and Corporate sectors of ANZ’s activities in Queensland and Northern Territory with a focus on Agriculture, Natural Resources and Infrastructure.

Russell is an experienced banker with extensive knowledge of retail, corporate, institutional and investment banking both in Australia and Asia.

Before joining ANZ, he was employed by the HSBC Group as Managing Director, Asia Pacific, Transport, Construction & Infrastructure based in Hong Kong, and prior to that, Managing Director of Wayfoong Shipping Limited, the HSBC Shipping Finance business, and prior to that Regional Manager of Financial Institutions with responsibility for business in Pakistan, Sri Lanka, the Philippines, Indonesia and Australasia. He began his finance career in Queensland and established the HSBC offices in that state in the early 1980’s firstly as an investment bank and then as a commercial bank Russell, until April 2010, was Chairman of Maritime Capital Shipping Ltd, a Hong Kong based shipping company, and was a member of the Hong Kong Maritime Council, an advisory body to the Hong Kong Government on maritime issues. 

He is also President of Indooroopilly Golf Club. He is a Senior Fellow of Finsia and a Member of The Australian Institute of Company Directors, Vice- President of the Australia China Business Council, Queensland.
